How do I know God is talking to me?
Nothing in this life is a coincidence. There is a method to each and every action, interaction, and communication.
This methodical, profound approach in our world is a result of many things, but primarily, it is how God chooses to speak to us.
While there are several ways to communicate with God and vice versa, here are 5 main ways that the Big Guy upstairs may be trying to grab your attention:
1. You hear a lifelike voice speak to you in times of prayer, meditation, or stillness.
When you meditate or pray, you open up communication channels with beings in other dimensions. This includes Heaven. Sometimes when these practices occur, individuals can hear a voice different from their own. This entity will offer information, insight, or instructions from an elevated vantage point. It may take time to distinguish between what is actually God’s voice and another being. Humans can hear from the Holy Spirit, angels, ancestors, and unfortunately, negative entities too. However, God’s voice will be clear and provide information that builds not destroys.
2. You experience repeating patterns or themes in your life.
A few months ago, I prayed for strength and good health. Within a few days, I started encountering people and events related to running. First, I ran into my old elementary school track coach. Next, I stumbled into a track meet beside my local gym. Lastly, a video discussing the benefits of sprinting popped up on my instagram feed. As I reflected on this, I realized that God was answering my prayer, telling me that I needed to start running again in order to improve my health. The recurrence of people and events related to track and field served as a strong message that movement was necessary for my success.
In addition to this, encountering the same kinds of people can be a sign that God is messaging you. A few months ago, I would always meet models. At the time, I had no idea why. However, once I began posing and thinking of various photoshoot ideas, I realized that I was coming into contact with people who had a similar gift to me. Therefore, this was God’s way of unveiling one of my talents to both me and those around me.
3. You experience an idea or dream that deeply resonates with you.
In theme with repeating patterns, God will also speak to you through ideas or dreams. If you keep getting an idea for a business, then God probably wants you to start that business! Or maybe you had an unsettling dream to move to a new city. That could be encouragement to make a regional move that will enhance your personal journey. While you may not have the exact roadmap for how you’ll achieve the desired goal, the idea or dream serves as a sign to take action.
4. You have conversations with strangers that speak directly to your situation.
Have you ever had a conversation that was so exact to you and your situation that it left you shook? God talks to us through people and God talks to people through us. These conversations can be lessons, blessings, or warnings. The benefit of this is that the message comes to us in a tangible, physical form where we don’t need to guess who it’s coming from.
Additionally, sometimes we will keep discussing the same topic with different people. Let’s say you’re a former basketball player and you’ve recently had several conversations where people mention coaching upcoming talent. This could be a sign that God is calling you to use your basketball gift to transition from player to coach. In both cases, the conversations serve as a way to bring you closer to your intended purpose.
5. You gain profound clarity or peace in nature
Lastly, God will speak to us through nature. Make no mistake, humans are a part of nature. We commonly separate civilization and nature. As a result, we have strayed from the principles that allow us to lead safe, healthy lives. In actuality, we should be aligning ourselves more closely with other animals, plants, and elements to get closer to God.
When you spend more time beside other forms of God’s creation, you’ll find that answers start flowing to you more directly. Why do you think people say a walk in the park clears their mind? Or listening to ocean waves calms them down? In these settings, you may gain more inspiration as they are less tainted by the shortcomings of man. You may feel your angels nearby. You may see signs of life in the plants and animals around you. You may even hear God’s voice whisper in the wind.
Listening to the Spirit is something that I still struggle with today. It is especially challenging to trust those divine signs when everything in the physical world is telling you the opposite. Sometimes I wonder if I’m interpreting the messages correctly. Or I wonder if I am overanalyzing.
However, when I act on those divine signs, a shift happens. A good one. When I started running again, my mood, my sleep, and my overall outlook on life improved. I paid attention to the many models I would meet, and shortly after, I started modeling for my own shoots and products I loved. Both of these instances fortified my relationship with myself, making me more confident in the person I was born to be.
Hopefully, we can all start leaning into those recurring ideas and themes or perfectly timed conversations that encourage us to pursue the things that will ultimately elevate us. Listening to those signs certainly takes time. Trusting them and acting on them certainly takes practice. As with anything, it takes time. My hope is that when we listen, trust, and act, the mystical world among us will have no choice but to grant our every wish.
